Keeping track of your sim downloads.

We've all been there, downloaded a MESS of sims and then when you've gone to put them in your 'hood discovered you can't remember who's sim is who and where you got them from etc.

I've seen a few threads about this kind of thing at legacy_writers and some other places, thusly, I thought it was high time we posted a little "Share your system" post to air what people in the comm do, and for people to ask questions or suggest tips for others to take on board. :D

So, how do you keep track of what's what? How do you remember who made which sim once they're IN your game? And do you have any downloaded sim stories 'from the wars' when it comes to adopting other peoples pixels into your game? :D

Often when packaging a sim from BodyShop, you'll find the actual Sim package is a string of numbers with the .package extension. And then once inside CAS you can't tell WHO the heck who is in the installed sim catalog.

My tip which I got off of some LOVELY pixel_trader's who were amusingly going crazy over at sim_rants IIRC? When installing my sims, I definitely use MacUnpac or CleanInstaller. When I extract a sim, I make sure its installed in my downloads folder and then I rename the file to '[usernameofcreator] - [name of sim].package' and then drop it in my Sims folder that I've created inside my Downloads folder to keep everything nice and neat.

When it comes time to put the sims into the game, I load up the hood the particular sims are going into, and at the neighbourhood screen type "boolprop testingcheatsenabled true" then I load up CAS. Once inside CAS I press shift+N and VOILA testing mode is on. Along with opening up NPC costumes and the like (want to make a bigfoot? YOU CAN!) this does one VERY important and life saving thing: Allows mouseover tooltips.

So when I go to peruse the installed sims catalog, I can now mouse over each sim and see who made it and what the maker named the sim in order to easily name the sim accordingly AND include any stats etc I need.

In a related issue: personally, I don't like to include the CC other people have with their Sims. I've spent a long time making sure my downloads folder is squeaky clean and contains only that which I've put in there myself. So as such when I install a sim I install their sim package file only, with none of their extra trappings. Often if I find I really like the CC that comes with a particular sims, however, I'll go find that CC and pop it into my game first before Sim installation. :D

ANYWAY, getting back on track. The tooltip display method ALSO means I can easily relocate where I downloaded a sim from to double check eye/hair colour etc if I've lost those in the 'transplant' when I've done it without CC. SO CONVENIENT!

Oh, this is brilliant and much easier than what I do. I keep a list of the sims I've downloaded, who created them, and where I downloaded them from. After putting them into my game, I fire up SimPe and use it to rename them. I usually open up each of the places I've downloaded from in separate tabs, and go through double-checking that I've named and credited them correctly.

I try to make the sim's last name the name of their creator. Like I have Gules Kohler-Wielle Bondchick currently running amok in my main hood.. :)

But um, yeah. Definitely switching over to your method!

Ugh, I never download sims with CC, so I always make sure all my available sims have a no-CC version....except a couple I have available now where I was too lazy :D

That is an amazing tip! Wish I knew of it last night, when I installed and townified a billion sims from the Founder posts :P.

I like your method and will be applying it for all the sims I will download from now on and those that I already have in game. :)

I'm going to copy you. I ended up getting a bunch of crashy stuff in my game and had to wipe out all my CC last night so now that I'm redownloading everything, I am doing MAJOR organizing.

that is absolutely brilliant, better than what I was doing. I downloaded a sim of each hair colour and write down their info on paper, so when I was in CAS I wouldn't get tem mixed up cos I'd only have one of each. Took a long time but now don't need to worry. Thanks so much xxx

This might seem really silly, lol but I'm having a little problem doing this. I download the sim, when I install, do I put it straight into the download folder and then rename?
I have been putting it into a seperate folder and installing it into that, but when I move it to my download folder, it doesn't showup in my make a sim bit.

I have saved loads of sims with their names and creators without installing now. Ready to get into my game and become part of my new legacy.

Any help would be appreciated.

It really shouldn't matter what folder you install your sims to initially - as long as the correct package file for each sim go into your downloads folder before you start the game up they should show up fine.

By default clean installer/mac unpac install them directly into your downloads folder, which is why I rename them there.

Does that help at all..?

OMG, this is a life saver right here! SO SIMPLE, I don't know wy I never thought of it before, NOW I can actually name them correctly and use them properly and be able to take photos of them. Something I was terrified to do so until now.
